Doyle calls for ban on hailing CBD taxis

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle has called for a total ban on hailing taxis in the CBD and possibly beyond.
Four airport-style taxi "super ranks" would be established instead in the city at locations yet to be determined, under Mr Doyle's proposal.
In a speech to the Melbourne Press Club, he said he would talk to the State Government and taxi authorities about his plan, and he will push for a trial to be held initially on Friday and Saturday nights.
He said it was currently dangerous to catch a taxi in some parts of the city.
The new proposal would ensure high police visibility and lighting at the super-ranks.
